OOSC Snow Park Overhead Jacket

OOSC’s Snow Park Overhead jacket has a laid-back park vibe with an extended cut that sits right over the bum and down the legs. This classic overhead jacket zips down the front, which only loosens things off rather than opening it up, but with a laser cut OOSC logo in the material underneath you do also get additional venting.

To help you get in and out of the jacket there's a full-length side zip, which goes right from the hem to the armpit. This two-way zip doubles as venting for the left-hand side of the jacket, with the right hand side having a more traditional mesh lined underarm vent.

The two large hand pockets meet in the middle and there's a handy microfiber goggle wipe on a lanyard inside. Above this pocket, you'll find a nifty storm flap sealed down by velcro, hiding another zip which gives you access to a massive pouch pocket. This has a media pass-through sleeve inside, so it is the obvious place for stashing your phone with headphones for tunes on the slopes.

The only other pockets on the overhead jacket are for a lift pass, located on the wrist and then one slightly awkwardly placed on the chest, although this is ideal for wallets and the like.

As with the other OOSC kit that we've tested, the zips are high-quality YKK with chunky leatherette pullers that are easy to use with gloves on.

We love the colours on the outside of the Overhead jacket, with contrasting panelling and bright accents on the zips and velcro, but it's inside where you get a real hit of colour, thanks to a shocking pink and bright blue lightning bolt pattern. Of course, you also get a highly functional powder skirt that you can zip out if you find it too fussy.

We found the material of the Overhead jacket soft, supple, and comfortable, and being quite baggy plays into the Overhead’s favour because it gives you complete freedom of movement no matter what type of skiing you do.

We really like the Lycra wrist gaiters, which unlike most other jackets go over your hands without pulling on the sleeves, covering your hands right up to your knuckles, and providing a bit of additional warmth.

We found the 80g of synthetic insulation to keep you perfectly toasty for skiing, that is to say, it keeps you warm but not so warm that as soon as you start hooning it down the slopes you overheat. The technical material keeps you dry in all but the worst of storms, with a 10k waterproof rating and critically taped seams.

If you like the style of an overhead jacket you can’t go far wrong with OOSC’s offering. It’s got the style and performance for hard days in the park, as well as on the slopes, and you can't argue with the value.

Artilect Shadow Canyon Ski Jacket

The moment I put this jacket from Artilect on, I thought I had found my new favourite ski jacket.

It immediately feels soft and welcoming but incredibly well built. It's one of those jackets that is minimalist but fully featured. And by that, we mean that it is a very high performing jacket in terms of waterproofing, breathability, and other performance features like the hood and zips.

Although the Shadow Canyon jacket is aimed at snowy mountain use it does not feature a snow skirt and we think this is quite deliberate by Artilect, as any jacket with a snow skirt is immediately labelled as a 'ski jacket' that somehow can't be used for other things. We like this approach as it means that there's less waste, it's more environmentally friendly, and is ultimately better for the consumer's pocket. Having said that the Shadow Canyone is £420, which is more than a drop in the ocean for most.

This is a 3-layer shell jacket, so it has no insulation but provides a fantastic balance of weight, durability, and waterproofing. The 40D two-way stretch nylon ripstop material is very soft and stretchy but also feels like it can take a few knocks. It feels super light and supple on the body which really helps when you're out in the backcountry or charging hard down the pistes.

With an athletic, close fit it isn't one for people who prefer baggy ski clothing and our sample is strangely a little tight around the shoulder and armpit area, so it may be worth sizing up from your usual size.

Impeccable build quality is visible all over the Shadow Canyon jacket, from the stitching, to the zips, to the adjusters.

Being a minimalist jacket has its strengths and weaknesses. With only two zipped hand pockets and one zipped chest pocket, the Shadow Canyon does not compete with some other ski-specific jackets which include a lift pass pocket and mesh dump pockets for your gloves inside. There is no hole for headphones but all of this is deliberate. Apart from the YKK Touchlink zipper with nfc smartphone compatibility, there are no fancy bells and whistles on the Shadow Canyon yet this still feels like a special ski jacket.

We absolutely love this simplicity. it's debatable whether a powder skirt is vital on a ski jacket anyway, but a lift pass pocket wouldn't have gone amiss.
